Dice Raw’s latest solo album Jimmy’s Back is a commentary on the American legal and prison system, especially how it affects minorities, such as blacks, latinos and poor whites. His album was inspired by civil rights advocate Michelle Alexander’s book titled The New Jim Crow and Dice’s album has inspired Philip S. Brown to write a musical based on Jimmy’s Back. The Last Jimmy musical, which Dice Raw himself has a role in, will play at the Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia, PA on October 24 & 25 (get tickets here).

After the jump watch Dice Raw talk about some of the issues he touches on his album, which features Philly rappers who have spent time in prison themselves. He also discusses his history with the Freedom Theatre and Rich Nichols, the late manager of The Roots who passed away from cancer in July after more than 20 years with the group.
